Year in Review

[box type=”alert”]You need to tell me exactly which images you want. Do not ask me to guess, just tell me. Once those are in place the copy can be chunked up a bit. You also have “Year in Review” as the same name for two different pages: one in the About section and another in the Giveing section. Both have different copy. Please consider a name change for one of those pages to eliminate confusion for both you-as-manager and the reader.[/box]

In recognition of the excellence of its academic leadership, UCT attracted a record amount in donations during 2010 from the United States and around the world. UCT reports that the global total was R177.7 million, a 12.2% increase over 2009 and 5.2 % over UCT’s then-record total of 2008. In rands, the 2010 figure is some R19.2 million higher than 2009.

In 2010, worldwide donations were received from 1,158 organisations and individuals; 27 contributed R1 million or more. The donor list was topped by a number of major United States based foundations that have consistently provided significant support to UCT. These include the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Carnegie Corporation of New York, Atlantic Philanthropies, Ford Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, Hewlett Foundation, Hope for Depression Research Foundation, Goldman Sachs Foundation, the ELMA Foundation, Medtronic Foundation, and corporates including United Therapeutics Corporation.

Donations from individuals worldwide in 2010 almost tripled in rand terms, though the number of individual donors fell, reflecting the continuing effects of the poor state of the economy on many individuals – a fact brought home repeatedly in responses to the University’s annual appeal campaigns. UCT Fund’s U.S. Alumnus Neville Isdell joined the “top five” donors club with a very generous donation towards the planned multi-sport stadium project and additional fundraising projects.

Results of 2010 Annual Appeal

Our U.S. contributions 2010 Annual Appeal total was just over $32,000, a slight increase from the previous year.  Ideally, UCT Fund would like to appoint a target range of double that amount for the 2011 annual appeal.  The most popular U.S. category of giving was for student financial support.  UCT reports that the global total raised for financial aid was around R40 million.

UCT Fund wishes to thank our United States based supporters – alumni, friends, foundations, and corporations – for committing to the University of Cape Town’s higher education mission.
