Emeritus Professor Daya Reddy has been appointed as the interim Vice-Chancellor.
Professor Batmanathan Dayanand ‘Daya’ Reddy, a former holder of the South African Research Chair in Computational Mechanics at the University, officially took the helm on Tuesday 14 March 2023 and will hold this position until a new Vice-Chancellor is appointed.
Professor Reddy is an outstanding leader in his field who commands enormous respect both internationally and at home. An alumnus of the University of Cape Town (UCT), Prof Daya took up a post at UCT in 1979, after completing a PhD at Cambridge University.
He truly has UCT blue blood in his veins! He has served as president of the Academy of Science of South Africa, was until 2021 president of the International Science Council (ISC) and is also Chair of the International Advisory Board of the Berlin-based Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
Prof Reddy has served in various leadership positions at UCT including as head of department, dean of the Faculty of Science and three terms on Council as a member elected by the Senate. Beyond his duties at UCT, he has extensive governance and leadership experience both nationally and internationally.
