The Board of the UCT Fund Inc. acknowledges that concerns have been raised pertaining to certain alleged events at the University of Cape Town. The Fund values the ongoing engagement of its global alumni community, whose support has long been instrumental in advancing UCT’s mission.
The UCT Fund Inc. is a U.S.-registered 501(c)(3) non-profit that raises funds for the benefit of the University of Cape Town. The Fund operates independently of the University’s governance structures, has no physical or operational presence on campus, and does not set University policy. It operates under U.S. non-profit law and is governed by a volunteer Board.
Funds raised by the UCT Fund from alumni and friends of the University of Cape Town directly support a wide range of initiatives at UCT, including student scholarships, flagship academic chairs, research infrastructure, and strategic institutional development. In recent years, the Fund’s support has enabled projects spanning from student success and access programs to globally collaborative research initiatives, all aligned with the University’s mission to advance excellence, equity, and impact on the African continent and beyond. The vast majority of funds raised are directed toward student financial aid, academic innovation, and capacity-building, ensuring that UCT remains a leading institution in a rapidly changing global landscape.
In light of the concerns raised, the Board resolved on Tuesday, 13 May, as a precautionary and temporary measure, to suspend certain Fund activities, including disbursements, solicitations, and events, pending further assessment. The Board has also formally requested that the University of Cape Town initiate a review of the matters raised.
The Fund expresses its continued respect for the University of Cape Town, its leadership, and its global community, and remains committed to supporting the University’s mission.
